Description Centuries of treaties, and other documents of the United States promised that “for as long as grass grows and waters run” Native people would always retain their lands undisturbed by settlers. But the Standing Rock protest put a national spotlight on Indigenous activism made necessary by the ongoing betrayal of these promises. The protest also underscored how little Americans know about the ongoing ecocide against Native people and about the longtime historical tensions between Native peoples and the mainstream environmental movement.
